  • I installed Windows 11 with an unsupported CPU, kinda funny how it just worked despite all their screeching that it wouldn’t work and updating not working, but installing with installation media was flawless.

It’s a real bitch, automatically logging me into my partner’s account for the whole system and overriding my local user settings when I open MS Office apps Excel or Word (but that’s just Windows), and it cries about my lack of TPM on those apps and the Start menu when it does log in and cries about me not being logged into a MS account otherwise, but you know what? Everything still actually operates.

  • Violence for the sake of violence is not the same as violence to stop violence. Everyone knows killing an abusive parent is morally grey whereas killing an innocent child is absolutely wrong.

I recently got a comment removed on the Fed because a mod misunderstood my comment. They thought that someone who maliciously harms the innocent is themselves innocent, therefore invalidating my ideal. My bet is they didn’t know what malice means, or they genuinely think that hurting people with no provocation doesn’t make you a bad person.

  • I put my chips (£100) on Emby.

I haven’t regretted my purchase. I can’t sell anyone on much either, because Emby does all the same as other services, except they’ve kept adding features while Plex kept doing the Google thing and taking them away. CPU transcoding is free I believe, as is remote streaming up to 10 devices for each user… Idk I paid pretty early on, but lifetime license is where it’s at. Subscriptions just open your asshole for greedy CEOs to fuck you. Best to keep subscriptions voluntary, like donating on Github or Patreon

  • The leadership (is supposed to) represent the people, the people do not represent the leadership. Israelis do not represent the Israeli government. Employees of a Meta subsidiary do not represent Meta, Facebook, or Zuckerberg. Don’t attack McDonald’s employees because the burger is more expensive, YouTube employees because the content preys on children or residents/soldiers of a country because the government decides to mobilise its army against another community. Employees are just victims of capitalism, just working there because they must, irrespective of politics.

  • You need any kind of mobo/CPU combo, I’ve heard 12th Gen Intel onwards are as capable of transcoding on the fly as an older GPU so you wouldn’t need both, but if you go older I recommend a GPU as well, just because it gives more flexibility with being able to use hardcoded subtitles without locking up the CPU, and streaming a lower bitrate version of the video if your internet is shit, instead of - again - locking up

For easy certificate management I use NginX Proxy Manager, for media I use Emby and for a domain I use Cloudflare but you can absolutely serve your server with DuckDNS or another DDNS service for free.

I paid about £200 to build my server, with a £30 CPU (Intel i6 3100), free motherboard, £50 PSU and £110 SFF case (rough costs), and holy fuck it’s so much cheaper than any subscription. Electricity is about £3-£5 a year and other costs are optional. I also sourced a GTX 970 for £90 that was more than up to the task of transcoding, but again, if you get a 12th gen you won’t need it.

I just remembered the HDD I started with was a spare (10TB Seagate Barracuda Pro, but I shucked (like shucking for pearls) an external HDD to get it, as I heard that you can get lucky and get a good drive for cheaper than it would cost to buy it. Said eHDD was about £250.
